About Me

My name is Sophie May, I am a student at Cheshire College South and West, I am currently finishing a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technology. I enrolled onto this course in September 2017 and finished the course in June 2018 with an overall grade of level 2 Distinction Merit.

On my BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technology course, I studied eight units receiving distinction grades in four out of those eight units. After my BTEC level 2 course finishes I plan to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Computer Science course in September at Cheshire College South and West.

I have many hobbies and interests, but I chose to study IT due to my aspirations to become a software developer. I have always been a creative individual at heart, but during my adolescence I developed a keen eye for detail, and the focus and drive to want to improve myself and refine my skills.

As I grew, so did the technology industry and now everyone walks around with computers in their pockets squinting at small, touch screens sending each other emojis and pictures of cats. And it basically just hit me, this is where the future is going, there is a demand in this industry for as long as it keeps progressing, and I knew that was where I needed to be.

I started looking around for work experience with small projects and I did a 6 week digital marketing project for a company called Value Chain in the Daresbury Science Park. I then worked on a small software project with my sister (who has a bachelor’s degree in software engineering), who was teaching me some of the basics of software development and I discovered that I really enjoyed it, I decided this was what I wanted to do. Finally, I decided I wanted to study towards a qualification, to enable me to become a software developer.

I then attempted to become enrolled on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Computer Science course but was told that due to the fact I only had two GCSEs (a grade B in GCSE English and a grade C in GCSE maths), I would be unable to without three other GCSEs. When I asked if there was any way to get on the Level 3 BTEC course, I was told to enroll on the BTEC Level 2 IT course and if I completed that I’d be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3, and so I signed up.
