Overview of the Units

On this page of my website, you can see the overview of each of the units with ‘read more’ links attached to allow you to view the topics covered within each unit. These ‘read more’ links will direct you to the individual unit pages, and I will explain the grades I received for each unit and how I personally developed and progressed throughout each assessment, as well as any work I produced.

Unit 1 – The Online World

The online world unit provides a foundation of knowledge for the online services and technologies accessible through the world wide web. In this unit we learned about a wide variety of online services and technologies such as cloud storage, email, collaborative software, online advertising, online communication platforms, database structures, file compression and data transmission methods. We also looked at the concerns surrounding security and privacy protection, and how users can protect themselves online. Read More on Unit 1 – The Online World

Unit 2 – Technology Systems

Technology systems provide a foundation of knowledge, of the software and internal hardware components of computer systems, and how they work. In this unit we explored the components that make up technology systems, and how these systems communicate with each other, and how data is transferred over a network. We also covered operating system software, utility and productivity applications as well as an introduction to programming. Read more on Unit 2 – Technology Systems

Unit 3 – Digital Portfolio

In this unit I was required to design and develop a digital website portfolio to display the collection of work I produced during my BTEC Level 2 IT course. The purpose of this was to demonstrate my skills and achievements, on an digital portfolio to potential employers or clients. This unit teaches students how a portfolio is created, by looking closely at the planning and development life cycle of the portfolio project. Read more on Unit 3 – Digital Portfolio

Unit 8 – Mobile Applications

The mobile applications unit covers the characteristics and uses of mobile applications and how to design, and develop a mobile application to a predetermined list of specifications. This unit teaches students how a mobile application is created, by looking closely at the development process for existing mobile applications, in the current market. In this unit we explored the purposes, uses and key features of popular applications to acquire a greater level of understanding when developing our own applications. Unit 12 – Software Development

The software development unit covers the purpose and characteristics of software applications and how to design, and develop a software application to fulfill a predetermined list of specifications. This unit teaches students how a software application is created, by looking closely at the development process for two existing applications. In this unit we explored the purposes, uses and key features of applications to acquire a greater level of understanding when developing our own applications.   Read more on Unit 12 – Software Development

Unit 13 – Website Development

The web development unit covers the uses and features of websites and how to design, and develop a website to fulfill  a predetermined list of specifications. This unit teaches students how to create a website, by looking closely at the development process for popular websites, in the current market. In this unit we explored the different types of websites and their use of interactive features to acquire a greater level of understanding when developing our own applications. Unit 14 – Hardware

The computer hardware unit covers the installation and maintenance of computer hardware in technology systems and how to improve and maintain components in a computer system to fulfill a predetermined list of specifications. This unit teaches students what the internal hardware components are used for and why they are needed in a technology system.

We were taught the benefits and implications of installing new hardware in technology systems as well as how to maintain the current hardware components in an existing system. In this unit we also explored how installing and maintaining hardware can impact on a business, compatibility issues and how the system fits the needs of the user. Read more on Unit 14 – Computer Hardware

Unit 17 – Multimedia

The multimedia unit covers the characteristics and uses of multimedia and how to design, and develop a multimedia products using a predetermined list of specifications. This unit teaches students how multimedia products are created, by looking closely at the development process for existing multimedia products, in the current market.
