Overview of My Digital Portfolio

In this unit I was required to design and develop a digital website portfolio to display the collection of work I produced during my BTEC Level 2 IT course. The purpose of this was to demonstrate my skills and achievements, on an digital portfolio to potential employers or clients. This unit teaches students how a portfolio is created, by looking closely at the planning and development life cycle of the portfolio project.

How Was This Unit Assessed?

This unit was an coursework assessed unit, through a series of three internally marked tasks, which demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of the digital portfolio design, and development process. I was asked to submit three tasks to demonstrate my understanding of the subject, which were marked against the assessment criteria for the digital portfolio unit.

What I Have learnt

The unit was split into three tasks to cover the learning aims for the assessment criteria, which for this unit were learning aims A, B and C. There were different grading levels for each task, with pass, merit or distinction being the awarded grades for the completion of each of the criteria levels. To complete these tasks, we were given a scenario with a set list of criteria to develop a digital portfolio to showcase the work produced over the duration of the course.

In learning aim A, I used the predetermined requirements for the given scenario to design a digital portfolio to display my work to a local IT recruitment company that recruits IT apprentices. I identified the purpose and user requirements for the website portfolio as specified in the brief I was given. I then produced a proposed design solution using WordPress to design the storyboards for the product, listing any assets used in my design. Then I produced an alternative design prototype, and justified my design decisions as to which design fulfilled the requirements as stated in the brief for unit 3.

In learning aims B and C, I created the the proposed portfolio website using WordPress based on the proposed solution I created. I developed a multi-page website portfolio, which I then tested for functionality, gathered feedback to improve usability and refined the portfolio based on the feedback I received. Finally, I reviewed the digital portfolio against the original requirements, to make sure the needs of the audience were met, justifying any changes made, and recommending further improvements for the digital portfolio website.

Reflection of How I Worked

This unit was simple to design as it is basically just an online portfolio of the work I have produced during my time on the BTEC Level 2 Information and Creative Technology course at Cheshire College South and West (formerly West Cheshire College). The only part of this unit that was challenging was the amount of self-reflection that was required in order to achieve the criteria.

I was required to explain what I did in each of the units for this course, reflect on how I worked on these units, what I could further develop my skills in each unit, the overall grade I achieved in each unit and provide examples of the work I produced.

For me, this was easy as I understood exactly how to explain each of these points within the portfolio without much difficulty. The only issue with this unit was the time it took to create each page of the portfolio and write up the information required for each page. Once this was complete, all I had left to do was complete the Evaluation and testing report for Task 3, which was easy for me because of how quickly I can produce these reports.

What I need to further develop

I would say I need I could improve the quality of my portfolio by expanding my skills and achievements to attract more interest to my portfolio to increase my employability.

My Overall grade

My final grade for this unit was a Level 2 Distinction.
